Welcome to the 49th year of Te Tai Tokerau Secondary Schools Kapa Haka Festival.  We are very proud to be hosting the festival in 2024, and hope that you enjoy your time with us.  Here is some important information to help make your time here run smoothly.

Should you need any help, or more information during the event, please pop into our Main Office (shown on the site map below) or look for one of our volunteers in a hot pink shirt!

Important Things to Know

  • The Pōwhiri will be at 9:00am on Wednesday 10 April in the Marquee.  Please gather on the sidewalk at the Gate 1 entrance by 8.45am. 

  • Performances will begin on Wednesday 10 April at 10.30am and will run through to 6:00pm. On Thursday 11 April, performances start at 9.15am, running through to 4.15pm. At the conclusion of Opononi Area School’s performance on Thursday 11 April, the handing over of the Mauri will begin.

  • Parking for cars is available on the top fields, accessible via Lawn Street. Please follow signage as appropriate. Please keep the bus bay clear of vehicles, as school buses will be operating as normal. The bus bay at the front of the school may be used for pick up and drop off only for buses.

    Disabled parking is available in Gate 2 outside the Main Office.

    Kuia and kaumatua drop off is at Gate 1, then parking up on the top field. If kuia and kaumatua require assistance, there will be golf carts available to transport them to and from the top fields.

    Buses will be parked up on the domain (top field), as marked on the site map. Access to buses can be done by walking past the market stalls up to the top fields.

  • Each roopū will perform twice, first in the Gymnasium, then in the Marquee. A copy of the official performance order is attached.

  • There will be a cash out facility at the Ōkaihau College Main Office over both days.

  • Kaumatua and kuia will be hosted in our school marae; Whakarongorua. Kaumatua and kuia will be catered for (tea, coffee, food and refreshments), and will have access to separate toilet facilities.

  • We will have staff and students to support your roopū over the two days of the festival. Staff and volunteers will be easily identifiable by their hot pink shirts!

  • If someone suffers a medical event (accident or illness), the St John’s personnel and ambulance is located inside Gate 1, beside the Gymnasium.

    There is also a stretcher, privacy tent, defibrillator and first aid kit at the Main Office (see site map).

  • If you discover a fire, please alert close occupants, activate fire alarms, then dial 111 and ask for fire. The fire alarm system will advise all occupants to evacuate the building. Assemble on the main fields behind the Gymnasium. If you require assistance to evacuate, please ask the person nearest to you. Fire extinguishers are in all buildings.

  • School staff are expected to manage their students’ behaviour. Ōkaihau College is a smoke-free and vape-free site.

  • Lost property will be at G1. If you find any lost property, please take it to G1 for others to come and look through.

 Market Stalls

There are over twenty market stalls offering a variety of kai. Please support these locals who have supported us by being here for these two days. Stall holders include;

  • Okaihau College Hockey Teams (nachos, bake stall, croc charms).

  • Ngapuhi Iwi Social Services (offering rest, refreshments and a children’s play area).

  • Ngapuhi Iwi Social Services (activity, games, Tiktok challenges, prizes).

  • Paniora Whanau (Steak, egg, onion sandwiches, seafood chowder, fry bread, rewana, steam pudding with cream / custard, takaku bread.

  • Lil Orbits Hot Mini Donuts.

  • Te Hau o Ngapuhi (promoting their services)

  • Tribal Roots Aotearoa (Iwi Maori tees, singlets, hoodies, headwear, eyewear and accessories).

  • Nga Mahi Toi o Horeke (home baking, mahi toi arts and crafts).

  • ·ATC Squadron 25 (nachos, steak sandwiches).

  • Haika Whanau (filled rolls, cheese cakes, muffins, hangi).

  • ·MammaZee (food wraps, homemade bread, Rongoa balms, soaps, jewellery).

  • Okaihau College Technology Department (clay items made by students).

  • P&K Kai (fried bread bombs, taniwha burgers, cold drinks).

  • Impact Northland Trust (promoting their services).

  • Cook Island Maori (Raro donuts, rewana, chop suey, mince, rice, chowder, pineapple pies, banana poke, pavlovas, coconut rolls).

  • ILOVEFOODIES (seafood boils, garlic butter mussels and prawns, seafood chowder, fry bread, steakn’paua, brisket nachos, load fries, cold drinks).

  • Sunway Food (steamed pork buns, dumplings, satay chicken, American hotdogs, poco chicken, fried rice, noodles, sweet and sour pork, honey chicken, spring rolls).

  • Churro Loco (churros).

  • Tohu Whanau (spit pork and lamb, mussel fritters, kina, raw fish, seafood chowder, fry bread, potato salad, coleslaw, chop suey, fishburgers, drinks).

  • Okaihau College Social Science Department (sausage sizzle, water bottles, lollies).

  • Missy’s Kai Kart (creamed paua range, mussel fritters, fried bread burgers).

  • Pick Me Up (coffee, frappes, mega shakes, smoothies, protein shakes).

  • Okaihau Primary School (sausage sizzle, water, cake stall).

  • Temptation Polynesian Treats (Otai fruit drinks, pudding and custard, banoffee desserts, trifle tubs, chop suey and rice, rawfish, vegetarian food, salads, watermelon, banana splits, etc)

  • Whanau Niue (chop suey, potato salad, raw fish, steak burgers, home baking, drinks).

  • Spartanz Netball Team (drinks, seafood chowder, rawfish, fried bread, sweets, island plates).
